Kunker sale 263, lot 2064

This specimen was lot 2064 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €625 (about US$808 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"APPENZELL-AUSSERRHODEN Kanton. 2 Franken 1812, Bern. Nur 1.861 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (canton of Appenzell-Outer Rhoden, two francs of 1812, Bern mint. Only 1,891 pieces struck. Very attracitve patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Appenzell, a small canton surrounded by the canton of St. Gall, struck coins until 1816. This rare type was accompanied by a four franken piece. The monetary system was 4 pfennig = 1 kreuzer, 4 kreuzer = 1 batzen, 10 batzen = 1 franken.
