Netherlands East Indies 1945-P 1/2 cent
This specimen was minted in Philadelphia for the Netherlands East Indies in 1945. The type was struck at the Utrecht mint 1933-39 but the 1945 issue was produced in the United States, the Netherlands being under German occupation. The alloy is technically brass, tin being absent, but the low percentage of zinc means the coin lacks the typical yellowish tint of brass. In 1949, the Dutch gave up their attempt to reconquer their colony and Indonesia obtained her independence.
Recorded mintage: 400,000,000.
Specification: 2.3 g, brass (95% Cu-5% Zn), 17 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM Y60.
