Steve Album sale 51, lot 2734
Bengal in 1942, from Hammond's atlas

This specimen was lot 2734 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AR 1/8 rupee, Murshidabad, year 9, in the name of Shah Alam II, struck either at Murshidabad or Calcutta (not distinguishable), sun mark on obverse, nearly XF." This type was struck with Shah Alam's regnal date. It is known for years 1, 7, 8, 9 along with 1/16, 1/4, 1/2 and one rupee. While the Mughal Empire lasted, the British in Bengal were careful to strike coinage in the emperor's name. The inscriptions are in Arabic. The date should read "۹".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.45 g, silver, this specimen 1.44 g.

Catalog reference: Stv-2.102, Prid-100. KM-81.1.
