Stack's Bowers September 2025 ANA sale, lot 42286
SB825-42286r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42286 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mansfeld-Vorderort. Taler, 1537. Eisleben Mint. Hoyer VI, with Gebhard VII, Albrecht VII and Philip II. PCGS MS-62. Presenting phenomenal quality for the type, and standing by far as the finer of just two observed in the PCGS census across two dates (the other merely being an EF-45 1631), the specimen provides deep cabinet toning, glistening brilliance around the devices, and a wonderful depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. A RARE and exceptionally impressive example." Mansfeld and its subdivisions were counties of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. The county of Mansfeld, already divided among four brothers, was permanently split in 1530 over religious differences. This is a joint coinage, their third and last. This type was struck 1531-39 and undated. Despite the ten available dates, it is rather scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.6 g, silver, 43 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-9479; KM MB68.
