Turkey 2002 10000000 lira KM-1170
This specimen was lot 75810 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. 10000000 Lira, 2002. Istanbul Mint. PCGS PROOF-63 Deep Cameo." The extremely high denomination of this NCLT is a result of the worthlessness of the Turkish lira. Until 1960, US$1 = 2.8 lira, then US$1 = 9 lira until 1970, then by 2001, US$1 = 1,250,000. The slide was arrested briefly in 2005, when a new lira was introduced (1 new lira = 1,000,00 old lira) but resumed in 2018. At present (July 2025), US$1 = 40.5 lira. Wikipedia comments, "Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī (Persian: جلالالدین محمّد رومی), or simply Rumi (30 September 1207 – 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century poet, Hanafi faqih (jurist), Maturidi theologian and Sufi mystic born during the Khwarazmian Empire."
