Canada 1978 cent
This specimen was lot 74495 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Mint Error -- Struck 20% Off Center -- Cent, 1978. Ottawa Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC MS-63 Red." This type was struck 1978-79. It is normally worthless but the error is notable. The Canadian small cent was introduced at 3.24 g in 1920 and remained at that specification until it was reduced to 2.8 g in 1980. It was reduced again in 1982, to 2.5 g. It was reduced again to 2.25 g in 1997 and converted to copper plated steel. The production of cents was suspended entirely in 2012 to little outcry.
Recorded mintage: 911,170,647.
Specifications: 3.24 g, bronze, 19.05` mm diameter, plain edge.
