Sincona sale 33, lot 2439

This specimen was lot 2439 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$2,849 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Schlesien-Münsterberg-Oels, Herzogtum. Joachim, Heinrich III., Karl II. 1552-1562 Dukat 1557. Reichenstein Ausbeute. Vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Silesia-Münsterberg-Oels, Joachim, Henry III and Charles II, 1552-62, ducat of 1557, for the Reichenstein mine. Extremely fine.)"

The duchy is located in Silesia and fell to the Hapsburgs in the seventeenth century on the extinction of the line. Frederick the Great of Prussia seized Silesia in the 1740's but it is now part of Poland. This type is listed for 1553-62.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 3.5 g, .986 gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3.53 g.
