Sincona sale 75, lot 210

This specimen was lot 210 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 22,000 CHF (about US$26,704 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Grossbritannien | Königreich. George II. 1727-1760. 2 Guineas 1734/3, London. Young laureate head. Selten. NGC AU55. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Rare, Extraordinary condition.)"

This double guinea was struck 1734-35 and 1738-39. This is the scarcest of the four dates and is only known with the overdate shown here. Only pattern 1733 two guineas are known to exist. George III did not issue two guineas so the last of the denomination is dated 1753.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.70 g, 0.917 fine gold, .492 troy oz AGW, this specimen 16.69 g.

Catalog reference: KM 576, Spink 3667. Bull 565. Fr-336.
