from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 21421

This specimen was lot 21421 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,860. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEPAL. 1,000 Rupees, VS 2031 (1974). PCGS PROOF-65 DEEP CAMEO Secure Holder. Wildlife conservation series, from a mintage of only 671 pieces. Features the one-horned great Indian rhinoceros, which inhabits the thin lowland strip of the country along Nepal's border with India. Displaying hard mirrored surfaces and nicely frosted devices with instances of reddish-orange toning on the rim." The SCWC notes that a few more were restruck in 1979. The rhinoceros appeared again on a copper-nickel 100 rupee of 1998 (KM 1103).

Recorded mintage: 2,176 plus 671 proofs.

Specification: 33.44 g, 0.500 fine gold, 0.9613 troy oz AGW.
