This specimen was struck for Japan by the Tokyo mint, which issued this type 1948-49. The five yen was introduced in 1948 as part of Macarthur's currency reform of 1948, which dropped all denominations under one yen. A pigeon is featured on the obverse. The hole was added in 1949. This issue can be hard to attribute as it lacks a photo in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: 74,520,000.
