Ponterio sale 168, lot 40108

This specimen was lot 40108 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $3,852. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 40 Franc, 1807-U. Torino Mint. NGC XF-40. RARE. From a mintage of only 619 pieces. Demarete Collection." The Turin mint struck French coins 1804-13 only, after which it resumed striking Italian designs. Altho the 1806-U forty francs is common, this date and the following 1808-U are rare.

Recorded mintage: 613.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
