Namur 1713 ecu Dav-1276
This specimen was lot 3488 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$14,395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH: Maximilian II. Emanuel, 1679-1726. Reichstaler 1713, Namur, als Herrscher der spanischen Niederlande. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Allongeperücke und umgelegtem Mantel//Gekröntes, ovales Wappen mit aufgelegtem Mittelschild und umgelegter Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, leicht justiert, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian II, 1679-1726, thaler of 1713, Namur mint, as lord of the Spanish Netherlands. Obverse: peruked, armored and armored bust right; reverse: oval arms with central escutcheon and Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, especially in this condition. Beautiful patina, light adjustment marks, extremely fine to uncirculated.)
Maximilian Emanuel war bereits 1691 zum Generalstatthalter der spanischen Niederlande eingesetzt worden. Nach einem Wechsel der Fronten auf Seiten Frankreichs im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg wurde er nach der zweiten Schlacht bei Höchstädt 1704 aus Bayern vertrieben. Maximilian Emanuel hielt sich weiterhin in französischen Diensten und wurde 1711 in die Herrschaft über Namur, Luxemburg, Charleroi und Nieuwpoort eingesetzt. Dort ließ er Münzen prägen, so wie dieses Exemplar. (Maximilian Emanuel was appointed general governor of the Spanish Netherlands in 1691. After a change of strategy on the part of France in the War of the Spanish Succession, he was driven out of Bavaria after the second battle at Höchstädt in 1704. Maximilian Emanuel remained in French service and reigned over Namur, Luxembourg, Charleroi and Nieuwpoort in 1711. There he had coins minted.)"
Several varieties exist (Dav-1271 thru -1277) exist of this rare issue along with a half thaler or écu (KM 31).
