Sincona sale 91, lot 3612

This specimen was lot 3612 in Sincona sale 91 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$497 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Groschen 1563, Zürich. Münzmeister Stampfer. Zürcherwappen in einem verzierten Fünfpass. In der Umschrift die letzten beiden Ziffern der Jahreszahl. Rv. Doppeladler mit Nimben, auf der Brust die Wertzahl. Gutes vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Switzerland, canton of Zurich, groschen of 1563, Zürich mint. Obverse: city arms in a polylobe; reverse: haloed double headed eagle with the value on its breast. Good extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"

As the sixteenth century turned into the seventeenth century, the groschen (three kreuzer) was superseded by the batzen (four kreuzer) in Switzerland. At this time, one thaler was 72 kreuzer or 24 groschen.
