Sincona sale 87, lot 4213

This specimen was lot 4213 in Sincona sale 87 (Zurich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,481 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Rappen 1846, Stuttgart. Spitzes Kantonswappen zwischen Lorbeer- und Eichenzweig. Unten kl. Mzz. D. Rv. Wert und Jahreszahl in einem Eichenkranz. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (canton of Zurich, rappen of 1846, Stuttgart mint. Obverse: pointed cantonal arms between laurel and oak branches; reverse: Value and date in oak wreath. Very rare, Very fine.)"

After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. This is very nearly the last issue of the canton of Zurich, as all cantonal issues were suppressed upon confederation in 1848. This type is known for 1842-48. This is the key date and the only one that is scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen 0.64 g.

Catalog reference: KM 194, D.T. 25d, HMZ 2-1180e.
