Mysore (1811-30) pagoda Fr-1358
This specimen was lot 588 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $300. The catalog description[1] noted, "MYSORE: Krishna Raja Wodeyar, 1799-1868, AV pagoda, Siva and Parvati seated facing // sri / krishna ra / ja in Devanagari, struck 1810-68, VF." This was struck circa 1811-30 per Friedberg, along with a half pagoda and fanam. Krishna Raja Wodeyar III was descended not from Tipu Sultan (d. 1799) but from the dynasty ousted by Haider Ali, the Wadiyars. He was installed as maharaja in 1799 at the age of five with British approval. He himself was set aside by the British in 1831, who ruled the kingdom directly until 1881, when the state was restored to his adopted son, Chamarajendra Wadiyar X.
