Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 184

This specimen was lot 184 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), Cu demi-sol au buste enfantin, 1720AA, Metz. D/ B. nu à d. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, copper half sol of the young bust of 1720, Metz. Obverse: bare bust right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Very Fine.)"

This type was the first half sol issued during the reign of Louis XV. It was minted 1719-24 at ten mints, of which Metz (shown here) and Rheims (mintmark "S") are the most common. Few survive in nice condition.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date[2].
