from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 757

This specimen was lot 757 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €115 (about US$146 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIII (1610-1643), AR quart d'écu de Navarre, 1612, Saint-Palais. D/ Croix fleurdelisée. R/ Ecu couronné, parti de France-Navarre, accosté de II-II. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIII (1610-43), silver quarter écu of Navarre of 1612, St.-Palais mint. Obverse: floriate cross; reverse: crowned arms of France and Navarre divides "II-II". Very Fine.)"

This type was struck at Saint-Palais in the Pyrenees 1610-32 with numerous varieties. Reverse legend: GRATIA.DEI.SVM.ID.Q.SVM = "By the grace of God, I am what I am."

Recorded mintage: 64,530, a better date but not rare.

Specification: 9.71 g, .917 fine silver, 26-31 mm diameter, plain edge or no edge; this specimen 9,50 g.
