First National Bank of Brawley, California
This specimen was lot 17629 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $9,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brawley, CA - $20 1902 Plain Back Fr. 654 The First NB Ch. # (P)9673, One of the Horwedel collections true trophy notes, as the only other example known from this small farming community in sprawling Imperial County is the damaged specimen that we sold five years ago as part of the Colver collection. Even though impaired and quite low grade, that note realized $3300. The Horwedel note is light years better, grading a strong Fine-Very Fine. Again, any estimate here is but a guess, because notes of this caliber have simply disappeared from the market at any price, but we would not be at all surprised to see bidding for this great item." This specimen was lot 20335 in Heritage auction 3563 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $9,600.
