large size $10

The first note was lot 20279 in Heritage sale 3557 (Long Beach, September 2017), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description noted, "Orange, CA - $10 1902 Date Back Fr. 619 The NB of Orange Ch. # (P)9878. This is much the scarcer of Orange's two issuing banks, with this institution emitting large notes only until its demise in 1927. A bright mid grade Date Back that bears low serial number 8, this attractive note made its last public appearance in our auction of the Charley Colver collection in May of 1999. Pen signed PMG Choice Very Fine 35, with mention of a couple of rust specks in the top margin, which affect nothing."

The second note was lot 2665 in Goldberg sale 62 (Beverly Hills, February 2010), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "1902, $10 National Bank Note. The NB of Orange, CA. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This is much the scarcer of Orange's two issuing banks, with this institution emitting large notes only until its demise in 1927. Although a fair number of notes are known, offerings have been few and far between. This is a remarkable high grade example, with outstanding pen signatures and bearing serial number 9." It was offered again as lot 20231 in Stack's Bowers Spring 2024 Auction - Session 6 - U.S. Currency (Costa Mesa, CA, March 2024), where it sold for $3,600.
