National Currency or National Bank Notes are currency issued by banks chartered by the United States Government to issue currency under their own obligation. The National Bank National Currency, backed by Treasury Securities that your local National Bank of Hometown had purchased with "lawful money" from and then deposited with the Federal Government's Treasury Department in an amount equal to the currency in circulation. This effectively doubled the amount of money in existence.

National Bank Notes were available to be purchased by the local bank from the Treasury Department in $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 certificates.
