France 1845-B 1/4 franc

Sincona sale 13, lot 2442

This tiny coin was struck at Rouen under the régime of king Louis Philippe of France (1830-48). It is a better date of a type struck 1831-45. All quarter francs of this reign are of this type, which is common. It was replaced in 1845 by a twenty-five centimes piece (F.167) and demonetized in 1852. The catalog[1] notes 108 dates for the type, some very rare. This specimen was lot 2442 in Sincona sale 13 (Zurich, October 2013), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$155 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH 1/4 Franc 1845. Rouen Fast FDC (France, quarter franc of 1845, Rouen mint, choice uncirculated)."

The Rouen mint also struck silver twenty-five centimes in 1845.

Recorded mintage: 1,176,361[1], third highest mintage date.

Specification: 1.25 g, .900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 1.25 g.
