Transylvania 1610-NB ducat Fr-339
This specimen was lot 2097 in Sincona sale 90 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 11,000 CHF (about US$14,536 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"UNGARN Siebenbürgen, Gabriel Bathori, 1608-1613. Dukat 1610 NB, Nagybanya. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. (Hungary, Transylvania, Gabriel Bathori, 1608-13, ducat of 1610, Nagybanya mint. Very rare, Extremely fine.)"
The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. Three different ducats are noted for 1610: KM 61 (standing knight, shown here, struck 1609-10), KM 62 (half-length bust of the prince, mintmark CV) and KM 74 (head of the prince). This one is the most available of the three but all are expensive.
