from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20454
France SB818-20454r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20454 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 5 Franc, 1807-L. Bayonne Mint. NGC MS-64. Incredibly well balanced in its presentation and on the cusp of Gem overall quality, this piece displays a full strike that not only imparts wonderful dimension in Napoleon's hair, but also crisply renders the closed wreath and denomination that make up the reverse centers. Exquisite tone, a blend of charming olives, golds and blues, blankets both sides with the vibrancy of the iridescence increasing near the raised surfaces. Finally, the appearance of few marks helps to secure the grade, with no instance demanding the eye's attention. Incredibly desirable as the single finest example certified at NGC or PCGS." Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Bayonne mint (mint mark "L") in 1807. It is the most common date for 1807. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fifth, struck 1806-07 with a complete set of this type comprising 23 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, .900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Recorded Mintage: 374,769[1].

Catalog reference: Gad-581; VG-1498, F.304/18, KM 673.8, Dav-83.
