Roman Republic 1849-R 3 baiocchi
This specimen was lot 21426 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[2] noted, "Roman Republic. 3 Baiocchi 1849R, Proof 65 BN NGC, Rome Mint, variety with round top 3. A true gem and very rare in Proof with incredibly reflective surfaces. We sold a similar coin graded Proof 65 RB with flat topped 3 in May, 2009 for $4,025.00." The Roman Republic was a short lived state set up in the Papal States during the European wide insurrections of 1848-49. It was crushed by foreign troops and papal rule restored until 1870. A considerable quantity of copper coins were issued along with a few silver in denominations ranging from half to forty baiocchi.
