Sincona sale 26, lot 3112

This specimen was lot 3112 in Sincona sale 26 (Zurich, October 2015), where it sold for 3,750 CHF (about US$4,632 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"France, I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815 5 Francs 1807. A, Paris. Selten. Sehr schön (France, first Empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, five francs of 1807, Paris mint. Scarce, very fine.)"

Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Paris mint (mint mark "A") in 1807. It is a rare date of a rare type. Other 1807-A five francs are known with a laurel wreath on the emperor's head. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fifth, struck 1807 only at Paris. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Nicholas Brenet, 1770-1846, and Jean-Pierre Droz, 1746-1823; this specimen 24.79 g.

Recorded Mintage: 49,417[2].
