Germany 1885-G mark

Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 56612

This specimen was lot 56612 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $120. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. Mark, 1885-G. Karlsruhe Mint. Wilhelm I. NGC MS-65." This type was struck 1873-87 at nine mints. This issue is a better date but there is little interest in date collecting outside of Germany. Mintages were large 1873-76 as the old pre-unification coinage was melted down but dwindled thereafter as Germany moved to the gold standard.

Recorded mintage: 468,000.

Specification: 5.55 g, 0.900 fine silver, 24 mm diameter.
