CNG sale Triton XXVII, lot 1199

This specimen was lot 1199 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $3,675. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEPAL, Shah dynasty. Tribhuvana Vira Vikrama. VS 1968-2007 / AD 1911-1950. AV Mohar. Dated VS 2000 (AD 1943). Legend within quadrate around central trident symbol; additional designs around; VS date in exergue / Legend and design in three lines within center of floral design; additional legend in petals. Lustrous with hint of toning. In NGC encapsulation 4863673-011, graded MS 67. Top Pop – the finest graded by NGC." This issue of king Tribhuvana Bir Bikram (r. 1911-50) is listed for VS 1969, 1975-1991, 1998-2003 (common era 1912-46). No date is given a premium, more likely due to lack of interest than any variation in rarity. Nepal was and is an independent nation between India and Tibet but under the strong influence of the British raj. Some coins are dated using the Saka Era (SE) and others using the Bikram Samvat Era (VS).
