Philippines 1946 2 dollars token

Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 58118

This specimen was lot 58118 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $360. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Gold 2 Dollars Token, 1946. PCGS Genuine--Ex Jewelry, AU Details. Unofficial token coinage issued to commemorate National Independence day." This token--presumably privately produced--was issued for the grant of Philippine independence on July 4, 1946. It is an imitation of the Spanish gold peso of Isabella II. Note the die clash on the reverse, barely visible under the hairlines.
