Brazil 1832-R 960 reis
The first specimen was lot 975 in Goldberg sale 46 (Beverly Hills, May 2008), where it sold for $2,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil. 960 Reis, 1832-R (Rio). Rio mint. Pedro II. A very nice example that rarely appears in choice quality. Well struck with lovely surfaces and nicely toned. Rare type and very rare in grade. NGC graded MS-63."
The second specimen was lot 1208 in Goldberg sale 55 (Beverly Hills, October 2009), where it sold for $5,290. The catalog description[2] noted, "Brazil. 960 Reis, 1832-R (Rio), (incorrect date on holder). Rio mint. Pedro II. Well struck with lovely surfaces and original mint fresh luster. Rare type and very rare in grade. PCGS graded MS-64."
This type was struck 1832-34 only and is the rarest 960 réis. It was superseded by the 1200 réis of 1834-47.
Recorded mintage: 3,039 (years 1833 and 1834 are even rarer).
Specification: 26.89 g, 0.896 fine silver, .775 troy oz ASW.
