England (1484-85) groat S-2159
This specimen was lot 1289 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $10,625. The catalog description[1] noted, "YORK (Restored). Richard III. 1483-1485. AR Groat. Type 3. York mint; im: sun & rose 2/–. Struck circa June 1484-22 August 1485. Crowned facing bust within tressure of arches; lis at lower cusps / Long cross pattée; triple pellets in quarters. Rich cabinet toning, small edge split and a few light marks. VF. Very rare York mint for Richard. Ex E.M. Norweb (Part IV, Spink 56, 19 November 1986), lot 894; D. Mangakis Collection; H.A. Parsons Collection (Part II, Glendining, 11 May 1954), lot 886; F.A. Walters (Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 26 May 1913), lot 469." The halved sun & rose mintmark with a pellet on the obverse dates this groat to 1484-85. While the London issue (S-2158) is not cheap, the York issue is rare.
