Nepal VS2031 25 rupee KM-839
This specimen was part of lot 34528 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), which sold for $1,740. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nepal: Shah Dynasty. Birendra Bir Bikram 3-Piece gold & silver "Conservation" Proof Set VS 2031 (1974), 1) silver "Himalayan Monal Pheasant" 25 Rupees - Proof; 2) silver "Red Panda" 50 Rupees - Proof, KM841a; 3) gold "Great Indian Rhinoceros" 1000 Rupees - PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. cf. KM-PS8 (for 2-piece silver set). An unlisted set, the 1000 Rupees quite scarce with a Proof mintage of just 671 pieces." This NCLT accompanied a silver fifty rupees (KM 841) and gold thousand rupees (KM 844) to promote wildlife conservation. The uncirculated issue was in billon (KM 839) and the proofs were struck in sterling silver (KM 839a). The Himalayan monal, Lophophorus impejanus, is the national bird of Nepal.
Recorded mintage: 11,000 struck in billon plus 11,000 in proof.
