Guatemala (1839) c/s 8 reales KM-107
This specimen was lot 51268 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1839-40). PCGS Genuine--Holed, EF Details; Countermark: EF Details. Issued by decree of 26 April 1839 through 20 November 1840. Countermark: Type II; radiant personification of the sun above mountains. Countermark applied to the reverse of a 1733-Mo MF Mexico Klippe 8 Reales of Philip V. With a host coin that is almost perfectly square in shape, this example would undoubtedly serve as an excellent representative of the countermarked emission, all while yielding immense appeal from the host as well. Lightly toned and highly attractive." This is a foreign eight reales counterstamped in Guatemala in 1839-40. It is a 'Type II', meaning that only one side was stamped. This particular method was used only in 1839. Foreign crowns were counterstamped from 1839-1841, during a time at which the Central American Republic was in a state of collapse and the country of Guatemala was emerging as an independent entity.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: host coin 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver.
