Heritage sale 3038, part of lot 36654

This specimen was part of lot 36654 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), which sold for $540.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic Eleven-Coin Proof Set 1953, KM-PS26. Mintage 600 sets. Farthing to 1/2 and Pond gold. A beautifully-toned set with all coins choice proof and exhibiting mottled surfaces with iridescent patina. Sold with box of issue." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1953-60 and is common.

Recorded mintage: 5,483,000 plus 5,000 proofs.
