Sedwick sale 27, lot 1111

This specimen was lot 1111 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $77.35. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Guatemala, 1/4 real, 1883, NGC AU 58. Bold strike, bright white with luster, no wear and minimal marks (fully MS in our eyes). NGC #4770572-028." Guatemala was the last country in Latin America to abandon the real, in 1912, a reflection of the extreme conservatism of the peasant society. The specimen shown is of a common type struck 1879-86. It is almost completely anepigraphic, lacking a mintmark or country of origin and bearing only a date and denomination. This is the key date.
