Oman, long a British protectorate, achieved full independence in 1971. Coinage began that year. She has watched enviously as her neighbors, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, harvest billions of dollars by selling oil, of which little occurs in Omani territory. This type is listed for 1970 only. In 1972, the coinage was reformed and the country name shortened to plain "Oman". Unlike the F.A.O. issues which were sold to collectors, this circulation type does not bear an A.D. date.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus proofs plus a few struck in gold (KM 41a).

Specification: 11.4 g, copper-nickel, 28.5 mm diameter.
