France 1706-D ecu
This specimen was lot 2621 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Ecu, 1706-A (sic) Choice EF. Louis XIV. 8-L type. Bust right. Reverse: Arms of France surrounded by 4 double L's crowned with fleur-de-lys between. Choice Extremely Fine." The type was struck at the Lyon mint until 1709; there are also ¼ and ½ écus struck during this period with this design. The type was issued 1704-09 and is common tho less so than the écu aux trois couronnes.
Recorded mintage: 536,555 (all new blanks), the most common mint for 1709.
Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
