France 1578-P ecu d'or

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 20182

This specimen was lot 20182 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, 1578-P. Dijon Mint. Henry III (1574-89). NGC AU-58. "écu d'or au soleil" struck at the Dijon mint for Henry III with the obverse legend starting at the bottom. Henry III had been elected king of Poland when he received word that his brother, Charles IX, had died. Henry broke down numerous horses riding back to Paris to seize the throne. Highly lustrous and quite good eye appeal." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy^[2] with a face value of sixty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. On this one, the obverse legend starts at the bottom by the mintmark.
