The United States dollar has a proud history going back to 1794 but the coin has been completely superseded by the dollar bill since the 1920's. Several attempts have been made to circulate a dollar coin, all have failed. The presidential series was introduced in 2007 with the first four presidents and the initial quantities were large. There was a flurry of curiosity as these appeared, which was soon replaced by indifference. The mint persisted, striking over sixty million of each design during 2008-11. In 2012, the mint gave up and struck the Chester Arthur and later issues only for collectors. The series ended in 2016 with Ronald Reagan.

Recorded mintage: 64,260,000 plus 745,464 in satin finish.

Specification: 8.07 g, manganese brass (6 Zn-3.5 Mn-2 Ni-88.5 Cu), 26.49 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM 426.
