Guatemala 1957 centavo
The first specimen was lot 71768 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. Centavo, 1957. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just five examples, this shimmering Gem presents a somewhat soft strike but also a dazzling array of brilliance. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The second specimen was lot 73491 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[2] noted, "GUYANA. 10 Cents, 1991. Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-69 Gold Shield. Tied with just three others for the finest graded in the PCGS census, this glistening Gem verges upon perfection and certainly dazzles the eye, all while emanating from the penultimate year of issue. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The specimen shown is from a type struck at the King's Norton mint for Guatemala 1954-58. The bust of Bartolome de las Casas still appears on Guatemalan one centavos altho the denomination is now issued in aluminum.
