France 1631-D ecu d'or
This specimen was lot 1228 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Ecu d'or, 1631-D (Lyon). Louis XIII, 1610-1643. Crowned arms of France. Reverse: Lobed, floriated cross. Scarce date. PCGS graded Extremely Fine Detail (Cleaned)." This type was originally worth fifty sols tournois in the sixteenth century, the inflation brought on by the Wars of Religion caused its value to steadily increase. At the time of issue in 1631, the écu d'or was worth 80 sols tournois. By 1636, it had risen to 104 sols tournois. This date is listed as scarce in Droulers.
