Saxe-Old-Gotha (15)58 thaler Dav-9753
This specimen was lot 1493 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1558. Saalfeld Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha, thaler of 1558, Saalfeld mint, choice extremely fine.)"
This type is listed for 1558-66 and is scarce but not rare. It was issued by the Ernestine duke Johann Friedrich II a few years before his realm was divided Saxe-(Old) Gotha, Saxe-(Old) Weimar and Saxe-Coburg. Johann Friedrich II retained Saxe-Gotha. This locale is sometimes called Saxe-Old Gotha to distinguish it from Saxe-New Gotha, a later creation of the endless shuffles of the Saxon duchies.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.88 g.
