This specimen was lot 1216 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. 50 Lire, 1911-R. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. 50th anniversary of the Kingdom commemorative." This fifty lire, tho expensive, is the most available fifty lire of the pre-World War One period. It was accompanied by commemorative two lire and five lire. Several countries, including France, Spain, Venezuela and Great Britain, issued large gold coins around the turn of the century to celebrate the permanence of the gold standard, to be shattered a few years later by World War One.

Recorded mintage: 20,000.
