Kunker sale 264, lot 3101

This specimen was lot 3101 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XVI, 1774-1793. Double louis d'or à la tête nue 1788, AA, Metz. GOLD. Attraktives, fast vorzügliches Exemplar. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold double louis of the bare head of 1788, Metz mint. Attractive extremely fine.)"

A fairly common double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Metz mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 153,316.

Specification: 15.29 g, .917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen 15.30 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 877, Dr/2 no. 604, Duplessy 1706; Fr-474; KM-529.2; Gad-363.
