from Sincona sale 11, lot 1315

The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux 8 L ("écu with 8 L's") struck in Dijon during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Droulers[1] prices this date as somewhat scarce, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue. This specimen was lot 1315 in Sincona sale 11 (Zurich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/2 Ecu aux huit L 1691, Dijon. Réformation. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half écu of eight L's of 1691, Dijon mint, reformed. Extremely fine.)"

Recorded mintage: 19,515 new plus 533,434 reformed.

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers. This specimen is 13.32 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 1515A. Dr/4 no. 616, Dr/2 no. 399.
