Brazil 1779 160 reis rev DSLR.jpg

This silver 160 réis was minted at the Lisbon mint for Brazil during 1778-86. This coin would have traded in the 18th century as one-sixth of a Spanish dollar. The 160 réis is one quarter the size of the more common 640 réis. In 1768 the weight of this denomination was lowered from 4.83 grams to 4.45 grams. Earlier silver 160 réis are known, starting in 1695. Many are priced very low in the SCWC but remain very hard to find.

Recorded mintage: 25,000.

Specification: 4.45 g, .917 fine silver, .142 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 205, Russo 312.
