Zwolle (1612-19) daalder Dav-4990
This specimen was lot 1474 in Jean Elsen sale 142 (Brussels, September 2019), where it sold for €190 (about US$247 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, ZWOLLE, Stad, AR arendrijksdaalder, z.j. Met titel van Matthias I (1612-1619). Vz/ Gehelmd stadswapen. Kz/ Gekroonde rijksadelaar. Krasjes. bijna Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Zwolle, undated silver rijksdaalder struck in the name of Matthias I (1612-19). Obverse: helmeted arms of the city; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. scratches, about Very Fine.)"
This obscure type, worth fifty stuivers, was struck in Zwolle during the reign of the emperor Matthias even tho his sovereignty over the city was only nominal. Specimens dated 1613 and 1620 exist. Florins (KM 17, 28 stuivers), half daalders (KM 19, 25 stuivers) and arendschillings (KM 16, 6 stuivers) were also struck using this design.
