Jean Elsen sale 142, lot 872
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 872 in Jean Elsen sale 142 (Brussels, September 2019), where it sold for €13,000 (about US$16,876 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV double souverain, 1635, Bruxelles. Premier type. D/ B. couronné et cuirassé à d., une grande fraise au col. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Superbe. Provient de notre vente 124, 14 mars 2015, 556. Voir l'agrandissement en couverture. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, gold double souverain of 1635, Brussels mint, first type. Obverse: crowned, armored and ruffed bust right; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, Extremely Fine.)"

This type is listed for Flanders, Tournai and Artois but is nowhere common. In 1637, the bust was revised to show a much smaller ruffed collar. The angel face mintmark denotes this as a Brussels issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold; this specimen is 11,00 g.
