Brabant 1576(h) 1/20 ecu
This specimen was lot 928 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €170 (about US$222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR vingtième d'écu Philippe, 1576, Anvers. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Croix fleuronnée. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver 1/20 écu Philippe of 1576, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: floriate cross. Rare in this quality, Extremely Fine.)"
This type represents a very early experiment with decimal coinage, over a century before Russia adopted her hundred kopeks = one ruble.
