Künker sale 264, lot 2030

This specimen was lot 2030 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$14,210 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Karl XI. 1660-1697. Riksdaler 1676, Stockholm. Münzmeister Daniel Faxell. Geharnischtes Brustbild l. mit umgelegtem Mantel//Zwei gekrönte Löwen halten das gekrönte, vierfeldige Wappen: Drei Kronen (Tre kronor) / Folkunger-Löwe (Folkungar), in der Mitte der fünffeldige Schild von Pfalz-Zweibrücken. Ohne Randschrift. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, winz. Prägeschwäche, attraktives, fast vorzügliches Exemplar (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XI, 1660-97, rikstaler of 1676, Stockholm mint, mintmaster Daniel Faxell. Obverse: armored, mantled bust; reverse: tow crowned lions support crowned, quartered arms with the three crowns; reverse: Swedish lion supports five-fold arms of Pfalz-Zweibrucken, no edge lettering. Of the greatest rarity, toned, lightly cleaned, attractive choice extremely fine.)"

Während der gesamten als "Karolinische Zeit" bezeichneten Zeitspanne von 1654 - 1718 war das schwedische Hauptnominal der Carolin, das 2-Mark-Stück in Silber sowie das mehrfache und Teile davon. Riksdaler wurden hingegen äußerst selten und nur in kleinen Auflagen geprägt. In der 37jährigen Regierungszeit Karls XI. geschah dies nur ein einziges Mal im Jahr 1676, als Riksdaler in einer Auflage von nur 791 Stücken geprägt wurden. Die Stempel wurden vermutlich von Anton Meybusch geschnitten, und die Rückseite ist eine exakte Imitation des Riksdalers 1654 mit dem Wahlspruch "In Jehova sors mea ipse faciet" (= Mein Schicksal liegt bei Gott, er soll es selbst gestalten). Sonst ist diese Devise des Königs Karl X. Gustav, des Vaters Karls XI. nur auf den frühen Dukaten Karls XI. aus den Jahren 1662-1665 zu finden. Seit 1670 lautete der Wahlspruch auf den Gold- und Silbermünzen: "Dominus protector meus" (= Gott ist mein Beschützer). Die Umschrift auf dem Riksdaler 1676 war somit veraltet. Der Vorderseitenstempel weist ein ungewöhnlich tiefes Relief auf, weshalb die höchsten Partien der Vorderseite sowie die entsprechenden Stellen der Rückseite oft schwach ausgeprägt sind. (Throughout the "Carolinian period" of 1654-1718 the Swedish main coin was the Carolin, the two mark piece in silver as well as its multiples and parts. The riksdaler, however, was extremely rare and stamped in small numbers. In the 37-year reign of Charles XI, this happened only once in 1676, when 791 Riksdalers were issued. The dies were probably cut by Anton Meybusch, and the back is an exact imitation of 1654 Riksdalers with the motto "In Jehovah sors mea ipse faciet" (= My fate is in God, he should make it yourself). Otherwise, this motto of King Charles X Gustav, the father of Charles XI, only appears on the early ducats on Charles XI from the years 1662-1665. Since 1670 the motto on the gold and silver coins was, "Dominus protector meus" (= God is my protector). The inscription on the Riksdaler 1676 was therefore out of date. The front die has unusually deep relief, which is why the highest parts of the obverse and the corresponding points of the back are often weak.)"

The catalogs note that the minting of riksdalers dwindled in the 1650's and ceased in the 1670's in favor of the eight mark but do not note why. The striking of riksdalers resumed in the eighteenth century after the Great Northern War (1700-21). The eight mark had about 14% more silver than the riksdaler of 29.25 g. The SCWC notes that restrikes were made in the nineteenth century but does not indicate how to distinguish them from the originals.
