Sincona sale 76, lot 1252

This specimen was lot 1252 in Sincona sale 76 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 20,000 CHF (about US$24,276 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | House of Savoy / Sardinia. Carlo Emanuele IV. 1796-1802. Doppia 1798, Torino. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. NGC MS65. Prachtexemplar. (Italy, kingdom of Sardinia, Charles Emanuel IV, 1796-1802, doppia of 1798, Turin mint. Very rare, especially in this condition, Uncirculated, Cabinet piece.)"

The Duchy of Savoy was promoted to the Kingdom of Sardinia when the duke obtained that island from the Austrians in 1720. This rare and expensive coin is listed in the SCWC for 1797-1800. The doppia was originally a double scudo d'oro. Carlo Emanuele lost his throne in the Napoleonic invasions but his descendant became king of the unified Italy in 1860.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.12 g, 0.905 fine gold, 25 mm diameter, this specimen 9.13 g.

Catalog reference: KM 99, MIR 1010 b (R4), Mont. 02 (R). Fr-1126.
